January Family Day: Arts and Cultures of Asia

Join us for our first Family Day of 2012, as we explore the arts and cultures of Asia!

Our second floor exhibit, Chess Masterpieces: Highlights from the Dr. George and Vivian Dean Collection, features several chess sets from throughout Asia. In celebration of the Chinese New Year and these beautiful sets, decorate your own dragon, a symbol of good luck in many Asian cultures. Then try your hand at origami, the Japanese art of paper folding. Create unique versions of familiar chess pieces, as well as animals that are commonly associated with the game.

Sessions begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The tour and project last approximately one hour.

No chessplaying experience or knowledge is necessary, and children of all ages are welcome! The hands-on activity is recommended for ages 5-12. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
